The Story

The Origin of the Chroma-Textures

It began in silence. For years, I traveled through the Romanian countryside for my photography and video project Left to Decay, documenting the slow disappearance of historic homes, churches, and forgotten spaces. But as I spent time within these walls, my focus shifted. I stopped looking at the room and started looking at the surface of the building.

I realized that while these structures were being abandoned by people, they were being reclaimed by a different kind of artist: NATURE. For over thirty years, the elements - frost, sun, wind, and rain - had been painting upon these surfaces. What others saw as 'dull' decay, I saw as a vibrant, living spectrum of form, shape, and color.

The Collection

The Chroma-Texture Series by Adam Soch, visual artist, is a definitive catalog of nature’s unplanned masterpieces. These are not digital manipulations, nor are they paintings created in a studio. They are Organic Extractions—physical records of time, oxidation, and elemental force, isolated from the vanishing architecture of the Romanian landscape.

What you see here is rooted in the Real. Every intricate layer and organic form is a truthful reflection of the material as it was found in the abandoned homes I photograph. My role is to identify the sections of decay that possess the soul of an artwork and translate them into a new context. In the studio, I work to enhance the Chroma—pulling the hidden, vibrant spectrum out of the dull surface and into the light. I do not alter the shapes or the history of the wall; I simply decide what is worthy of being seen and give it the vibrance it deserves. These works represent a partnership: Nature provides the canvas, the form and the shape; I provide the eye, the chroma and the frame. Because these textures are born from the unpredictable effects of the elements, no two pieces can ever be identical. Each extraction is a one-of-a-kind document of a wall that no longer exists in this form. This collection is dedicated to the preservation of that fleeting beauty—bringing the hidden soul of decay into a space of permanence.

The Artist

Adam Soch — Visual Artist

I am a visual artist and filmmaker driven by a singular, lifelong obsession: archiving the fleeting moment. For thirty years, I lived and worked at the heart of the American performing arts scene. In the theaters and opera houses of the United States, I mastered the art of capturing the ephemeral—the precise second where light, emotion, and performance intersect, never to be repeated.

When I moved to Romania, I applied that same disciplined eye to the vanishing architecture of the East. What began as a mission to document abandoned homes and forgotten churches for my Left to Decay project evolved into a deep, personal passion. From the dust of these ruins, the Chroma-Texture Series was born. I have become extremely passionate about this work; I believe in it because it allows me to find beauty where others see only loss.

My video and photography work has been exhibited internationally, from the halls of MoMA PS21 in New York to galleries in Los Angeles and Berlin. These experiences have reinforced my belief that the image is a universal language.

My work is rooted in the conviction that art possesses a transformative power. As a lover of theater, film, and opera, I have seen how we can create beauty out of thin air. In these ruins, I find it hidden under layers of time. I believe that art can heal; it can transform something dark and forgotten into a vibrant explosion of color and joy. To me, the Chroma-Texture is proof that even in decay, there is a beauty worth cherishing.
